About
Welcome to the Historical Society of Southern California!
Founded in 1883, the Historical Society of Southern California (HSSC) is the oldest historical society in California. Our headquarters is in El Alisal, the former home of author, editor and cultural activist Charles Fletcher Lummis.
HSSC programs reach out to a diverse cultural community. They include the Southern California Quarterly journal, a monthly newsletter, and a distinguished series of books. We also honor members of our community with our Awards program. In addition, HSSC conducts daylong tours, planned around specific historical themes. Check our Calendar for upcoming events.
Exciting things are happening here at the new HSSC website. You can now order our publications online from our main site. Don’t forget to take a look at our new Newsletter archives and keep your eyes open for changes taking place within the next couple of months.
