"Keeping History Alive" is a program designed to augment the Los Angeles County public school system's lack of history teachig in the classroom cirriculum. This is a two-pronged program that addresses a pressing need for history enrichment and education in the K-12 schools of Los Angeles County. Federal and state funding for enrichment and professional growth of teachers is devoted almost entirely to reading, language arts and math. As important as these subjects are, history, unfortunately, is being left behind for hundreds of teachers who cannot afford basic curriculum aids such as reference books, field trips, videos, software, etc. |

Through this program HSSC:
(1) provides grants of $90,000 over three years directly to teachers, especially those of at-risk, low-income and disadvantaged students, to purchase the resources they need to keep history instruction alive; and
(2) invests nearly $40,000 in Highland Park elementary schools, teachers and their students through a curriculum-compatible history program of organized field trips to the Lummis Home and Garden with instructive projects.
This program helps students partake in curriculum-compatible activities such a field trips, and will provide classroom resources so that they can gain a better understanding of grade-level appropriate local history. Most importantly, they have the opportunity to personally sense the excitement of history, develop a sense of pride for what historical resources their community has to offer, and integrate their own ideas and creativity into the learning process. Additionally, teachers will have the financial resources to enrich their classroom teaching and partake in professional development opportunties such as continuing education through seminars, training, and or certification.
